Daily Fantasy Football is an online game where you create your own football team using real-world players from different teams. The performance of your virtual team is then based on the real-life performance of those players in their actual games. In essence, you become a virtual team manager, making strategic decisions that could lead to victory.

This type of game falls under the umbrella of 'fantasy sports', which are online games that allow players to manage virtual teams of real players of a professional sport.

Daily fantasy football differs from traditional fantasy football in its duration. Traditional fantasy football spans an entire season, while daily fantasy football typically takes place over a single round of games. Normally a single round consists of one week of the NFL where every member of your fantasy team would play once. In this way, daily fantasy football is a bit of a misnomer as it is more accurately a "Weekly" fantasy football time duration.

SmashUp Fantasy Sports adds a twist to the traditional daily fantasy football gameplay by adding SmashCards which add an additional layer of strategy to the scoring. These cards change the rules of scoring so that you can target additional aspects of the game beyond just which players you think will score the most number of points. How Does Daily Fantasy Football Work?

Step 1: Join a Tournament

Firstly, you would join a tournament. These tournaments can vary in size, from just a few players to several thousand. For SmashUp Fantasy Sports - there is currently just 1 tournament per week so every user will enter the same tournament by default.

Step 2: Draft Your Team

Once you've entered a tournament, the next step is to 'draft' your team. In daily fantasy football, you have a fixed budget, often called a 'salary cap,' to spend on players for your team. Each real-world player is assigned a virtual 'price' based on their ability and recent form.

For instance, let's say your salary cap is $50,000, and you need to select a squad of 9 players. The price of players might range from $3,000 to $9,000, and you need to choose players in such a way that their total cost does not exceed your salary cap. The challenge here is to balance between selecting star players, who are usually expensive, and less-known players, who are cheaper, to ensure you do not exceed your salary cap.

Step 3: Earn Points

After your team is set up, you'll earn points based on your players' performances in the real world. For example, if one of your players scores a touchdown in a real game, your fantasy team will earn points. Other actions, like passing yards, kicked field goals, or interceptions, can also earn (or lose) points.

Different contents may have different scoring systems, but to give you a rough idea, here's a simplified example:

  • Touchdown: +6 points

  • Passing yards: +1 point for every 25 yards

  • Interception: -2 points

To view the full scoring breakdown by player position - please see the Player Scoring article. At the end of the contest, the player whose team has the most points wins.

SmashCards

While selecting the players for your team, you will also have the ability to select powerup SmashCards. Just like there is a player salary budget, there is also a card cost budget. Each card has a different cost and you can select as many cards as you want that will fit within the budget. For full details on the cards and their scoring effects, please see the Card Scoring article.

Conclusion

Daily Fantasy Football combines the thrill of sports with the strategy of management games. You don't have to be a die-hard football fan to enjoy it, as the game's success depends more on strategic team building and player performance rather than in-depth knowledge of the sport. So, whether you're a football aficionado or a casual viewer, you'll find something to love in SmashUp Fantasy Sports.
